Senior Software Engineer - API

About the role 

As a Senior Software Engineer – API within our Digital Delivery team, you’ll play a hands-on role in building the high-quality APIs that power Medibank’s digital experiences. You’ll be deeply involved in day-to-day development while also helping set and maintain best practice engineering standards across our agile delivery squads. 
Around 70% of your time will be focused on delivering user stories as an active member of an agile squad. You’ll also spend time mentoring engineers, uplifting code quality and supporting our shared engineering standards.  

The remainder of your work will involve partnering with stakeholders to evolve our API capability to meet current and future business needs. 
This role is key to shaping reliable, scalable and secure digital assets that support Medibank’s mission to improve the health and wellbeing of Australians. 

This is a work from home role - we are open to candidates from interstate 

Your impact?  

• You’ll play a key role across the full software development lifecycle, collaborating with engineers, product managers and stakeholders to design and deliver reliable, secure and scalable API solutions. 
• Design and build maintainable, secure, scalable and well tested software. 
• Develop and enhance RESTful APIs and microservices used across our digital channels. 
• Contribute to planning, solution design, coding, testing, CI/CD pipelines, deployment and configuration activities. 
• Implement robust authentication and authorisation patterns. 
• Participate in code reviews and help continuously improve engineering practices. 
• Build components that support architectural test patterns using modern engineering and design principles. 
• Assist with overall system and solution architecture. 
• Work closely with product, engineering and business teams to define clear technical requirements. 
• Mentor and guide junior engineers, contributing to a positive and supportive team culture. 
• You will also contribute to maintaining the reliability of our digital services by supporting incident management activities, assisting with restoration of service, and providing occasional production support as needed.

 About you? 

• Strong understanding of modern and legacy integration approaches, including APIs, SOA, message‑based middleware, data modelling, and integration via staging tables or stored procedures. 
• Practical views on effective vs ineffective system integration patterns, including REST vs SOAP, pub/sub vs request‑reply, message queuing, and the role of ESBs. 
• Experience developing integrations using multiple languages and technologies such as Java, GraphQL, Node.js, and scripting across Linux and other operating systems (FTP/SFTP, etc.). 
• Hands‑on experience with Spring Boot, Apache Camel, and building APIs and microservices. 
• Knowledge of AWS, including message streaming technologies and associated best practices. 
• Familiarity with build and automation tools such as Ant, Maven, Gradle, Jenkins, and Bamboo. 
• Experience working in Agile environments (e.g., Scrum using Jira) as well as more structured delivery approaches.
