The Orthopaedic Institute (TOI) is a Medibank Joint Venture with a group of renowned orthopaedic surgeons (SydOrtho) and Macquarie University Hospital. It is a world-class orthopaedic surgical centre, comprising 28 beds and 4 operating suites focused on short-stay orthopaedic procedures.
The Opportunity
We’re seeking an experienced Director of Operations and Strategic Partnerships to lead operational performance, financial sustainability, and surgeon engagement for The Orthopaedic Institute. In this pivotal role, you’ll drive commercial outcomes, strengthen our partnership with MQ Health, and support the delivery of exceptional short‑stay surgical care. This is a full-time permanent position based onsite at Macquarie University Hospital, North Ryde.
Your Impact
You’ll influence strategic and operational direction, manage the annual budget negotiation with MQ Health, and lead initiatives that enhance patient flow, optimise costs, and support surgeon engagement. Your leadership will be crucial in ensuring TOI operates efficiently, transparently, and sustainably.
What You’ll Do
- Oversee TOI’s financial and operational performance, including compliance with the Management Agreement.
- Lead improvement initiatives that drive commercial results, operational efficiency and patient throughput.
- Manage the annual budget process, developing evidence‑based modelling and negotiating with MQ Health.
- Optimise revenue, rebates and consumables management in partnership with finance, procurement and health funds.
- Build strong surgeon engagement, including leading forums, resolving operational issues and supporting growth.
- Prepare monthly performance reports for the Operations Committee and SydOrtho Board
- Provide clear reporting to governance committees and maintain strong relationships across clinical and corporate stakeholders.
About You
You’re strategic, commercially minded, and experienced in operational management, financial analysis, and stakeholder engagement. You excel at navigating complexity, building trusted relationships with clinicians and executives, and delivering measurable improvements. With tertiary qualifications in health administration, business, commerce, or a related field, you also bring:
- Extensive senior operational leadership experience in complex, multi‑stakeholder service environments, including proven success optimising performance, resource utilisation, and end‑to‑end service flow.
- Strong stakeholder and people leadership capability, leading cross‑functional teams and influencing senior executives and external partners
- Commercial, analytical, and financial acumen, with experience in contract negotiations, financial modelling, and delivering improvement initiatives that drive commercial and operational outcomes.
- Governance and executive reporting experience
- Strategic partnership development, with a track record of building and maintaining effective external relationships.
Desirable Healthcare Experience
- Experience working in or closely with healthcare, hospital, or clinical settings
- Understanding of patient flow, clinical workflows, and short‑stay or day surgery models, including perioperative operations.
- Knowledge of health funding models, rebates, and private health insurer relationships, and experience partnering with clinicians, surgeons, or medical groups.
