The Opportunity


As a Mental Health Indigenous Counsellor, you play a part in helping some of the most vulnerable people in our community. In this rewarding role, you will create change by assisting people experiencing emotional distress as a result of depression and anxiety and deliver the best possible smoking cessation outcomes for Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander clients in NSW.


As an Indigenous Counsellor within Medibank you will safely and efficiently provide support ranging from safety planning, counselling and provision of referrals. As part of the team, you will provide quality counselling to people wishing to quit smoking, providing both inbound and outbound support for Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander clients and the general population.


This is a virtual telephone health service requiring you to work from home. Applications will be considered for a fixed-term contract, across a 24/7 roster.


About the role


This is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week service open to anybody who feels the need to reach out for support. You will provide counselling services and refer to relevant support networks as required to achieve the best possible outcome for each caller using your strong clinical skills and experience.


This gratifying role encompasses the following:

  • 5 days of virtual (at home) training
  • Supervised precepting shifts
  • Customised rotating roster - we operate 24/7, 7 days per week
  • A virtual leadership and supportive network for you to feel a part of the team no matter where you are based


A key aspect of the role will include liaising with Aboriginal Health Services, Coordinating and distributing "quit fulfilment" packs, delivering cultural awareness amongst Quitline staff, supporting the Coordinator in community engagement activities, including presentations and liaison and implementing localized initiatives to promote quitting.


Qualifications and Experience


We are looking for experienced counsellors passionate about delivering telephone-based mental health counselling services. To qualify for this position, you must hold one of the following qualifications:


  1. A tertiary degree (of minimum three years duration) in a relevant discipline (social science, social work, welfare studies, psychology or counselling); or
  2. A tertiary degree (of minimum three-year duration) and a post-graduate degree or diploma in a relevant discipline (Social Science, Social Work, Welfare Studies, Psychology or Counselling); or
  3. You are a registered nurse with a minimum of ten years experience in mental health nursing.


 In addition to the above it is essential to this role that you can demonstrate:

  • A minimum of two years of full-time counselling experience post your relevant qualification and a demonstrated ability to work in a strengths-based or solution-focused framework (preferably telephone/web chat counselling);
  • Have knowledge of depression, anxiety and associated issues, particularly primary care pathways.  This entails either having completed a mental health/abnormal psychology unit/subject as part of university course work, having relevant field experience in mental health or telephone experience in a related field.
  • Proof of application of working with children check 
  • An active involvement in Community Engagement activities, specifically with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities.

Technology Requirements


As this is a phone-based telephone service there are minimum setup requirements for you to adequately perform in this role including:


  • Private room/space which can be used for your home office set up
  • Active landline and suitable internet connection 
  • You have strong IT skills and proficiency in telephony-based systems where you are comfortable navigating software, typing and talking at the same time. ​​
