The Opportunity


At Medibank, Procurement are focused on delivering the best value through flawless execution for our customers. We strive to be a center of excellence and commercial experts enabling Medibank to achieve its objectives through the application of leading practice category management, sourcing, supplier management and procure-to-pay services.


Reporting to the Head of Commercial Category Management, the Category Manager is responsible for formulating and executing business-wide category strategies that deliver the most value within supplier partnerships in an efficient manner.


This will be a 12-month fixed-term contract.


Where you can add value


The Category Manager’s ability to gain credibility with internal customers and influence outcomes to deliver value and mitigate risks is critical.  An in-depth understanding of the supply market for each category, and the ability to determine opportunities for cost reduction and supplier enhancement, are key to your success in this role.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing strategic input and market intelligence and best practices in the execution of key sourcing and contract management activities;
  • Developing a clear mission statement within nominated categories that aim to deliver value beyond cost savings and focus on holistic benefits that initiatives or changes to third party solutions or contract structures can bring to the business;
  • Leading and developing the capability of nominated category team members whilst acting as the key business partner, establishing strategic relationships between procurement and the wider business;
  • Acting as the interface between business unit customers, procurement managers and suppliers where required; and
  • Defining supplier performance/productivity improvement criteria and measures within nominated categories.


About you


You will have:

  • Strong experience in a procurement or category management role and experience managing indirect spend categories or relationships within Marketing, Property and/or Corporate Services industries;
  • Exceptional relationship management skills, particularly influencing cross-functionally;
  • Ability to build rapport and establish constructive relationships, be comfortable presenting to groups, you are engaging and communicate in a way that captures and holds the attention of others;
  • An understanding of value and cost drivers for business, maintains an awareness of the internal and external environment, actively seeks out information and uses networks to get things done;
  • A sense of urgency to get things done with the ability to balance the timeliness, quality and cost of outcome;
  • Strong organization skills both for self and others, can manage multiple priorities without getting overwhelmed; and
  • Sound knowledge of the health and/or the insurance industry and exposure to Ariba and SAP Procure to Pay and Source to Contract is highly desirable.
